Business burglaries

Hello Resident,

Business burglaries are occurring in vulnerable areas of business parks/industrial estates where lighting is extremely poor or non-existent, allowing offenders to operate out of sight.

Therefore, I advise you to walk the perimeter of your business property and check that external areas are adequately lit.

Secured by Design state:

- in terms of security, the objective of lighting commercial units after dark is to deter or detect an intruder.

- Lighting design should be coordinated with a CCTV installation (…) and the landscape designed to avoid any conflicts and to ensure that the lighting is sufficient to support a CCTV system. Light fittings should be protected where vulnerable to vandalism.

- A lighting scheme should provide uniformed lighting levels with good colour rendition and be sufficient to cater for lawful after dark activity around the industrial or warehouse unit and site. It should not cause glare of light pollution and should support both formal an informal surveillance of the site.

- Bollard lighting is purely for wayfinding and can be easily obscured as it does not project sufficient light at an appropriate height which makes it difficult to recognise facial features and can increase the fear of crime.

Good lighting in conjunction with CCTV can be very effective.

Thinking of ways of layering security in your premises is advisable.

For crime prevention advice or a visit to your property, please do not hesitate to contact.

Kind regards,

Sian
