OPERATION ANKARA (ASB Driving)

Dear Resident

In the evening of Sunday 2nd February 25, the driver of a black Vauxhall Astra was issued with a Section 59 Police Reform Act warning notice after driving inconsiderately on Sandford Avenue in Church Stretton. The loud exhaust system could be heard echoing across the town on Sunday night as the driver proceeded to 'high rev' unnecessarily bringing attention to himself. S59 warnings are given to prevent recurring behaviour by the driver or indeed anyone using the vehicle. The warning lasts for 12 months and can result in seizure and disposal if the vehicle (or driver) is seen to drive carelessly/inconsiderately again.
Operation Ankara aims to tackle anti-social driving in our rural towns and villages. It was created as a direct response to the rise in public concern. The excessive sound of modified or over 'revved' loud vehicles can have a significant effect on the quality of life of residents in particular those who suffer from mental health problems such as PTSD, sleeping problems and those with young families. The team will not tolerate this sort of behaviour and will take steps to prevent and detect traffic offences.
As the days get longer and we move into warmer and drier months (hopefully!), my teams across South Shropshire will be targeting drivers who ignore the warnings to be considerate of others around them.
Please consider reporting inconsiderate driving to us either through neighbourhood matters or online reporting on the West Mercia website www.westmercia.police.uk

I wish you all a quieter evening than it began.

Inspector Damien Kelly
