Good afternoon Resident
Church Stretton SNT have today carried out a brief 30 minute speed enforcement session on the Ludlow Road between Cemetery Lane and Cross Bank in Little Stretton under our Operation Aurora efforts to reduce speed on our roads. After engaging with many residents who are concerned about speed in this area, we began with a session after lunch to test what sort of speeds are moving past at that time of day. I'm pleased to say that none of the vehicles seen were exceeding the prosecution threshold but there were five vehicles exceeding the 30mph speed limit. The highest was 33mph and given that most vehicle non-calibrated speedometers are designed to show an approximate 2mph higher reading than is accurate, this shows that if the driver was concentrating on speed, they would have seen 35mph and perhaps drive slower. Today's session adds evidence that there is a potential issue on this stretch of road and we will now look to add this location to our Op Aurora plans during higher risk times. I understand from a recent town council meeting that an increase in signage is being explored to help warn drivers and remind them of the restricted zone. The team are committed to working with partners and residents to make the area safer. Our team do not want to unnecessarily prosecute drivers for lapses in concentration but the real risk is to the pedestrians of Ludlow Road and other road users (such as a horse who passed us by during the session). We cannot tolerate risk of serious injury or life such as this which is why the team are passionate about Op Aurora. We have more sessions booked into the calendar to target this stretch of road so please take care when driving around the area not to lose concentration and creep over the limit.
Thank you
Inspector Damien Kelly
