Commercial building security Crime prevention is about building layers of prevention, the more layers you build the better your security is.
• Accredited CCTV suppliers can be found on the Secured By Design website. Please note CCTV is currently controlled under the Data Protection Act 2018 which is the UK version European wide GDPR. Please refer to the Information Commissioners Office for information regarding regulations for CCTV. Please also ensure your business policies reflect CCTV regulations. • If your CCTV backs up to a hard drive, please ensure the hard drive is secured and hidden away. • Please note: CCTV should not be used in lieu of basic security measures. • We strongly recommend that information pertaining to your security is kept between yourself and those who need to know.Where recommendations have been made for additional physical security, it is assumed that the product is compliant with the appropriate standard and competent installers will carry out the installation as per manufacturer guidelines. Lighting • Lighting makes it more difficult for intruders to hide in the shadows and also provides you and your employees with a greater level of reassurance. • Install external lighting around the property, ensuring that you have all areas covered, if possible protect lighting in a steel wire cage. • Consider movement detectors fitted to lighting.Windows • Protect windows with internal grilles. • Security grilles should be to standard: LPS 1175 SR (Grade 2 or 3+) or see Secured By Design website for more information.
Doors • All external doors, including fire doors, should be locked and secured when the building is closed and not in use. • Ensure all doors are fitted with suitable locks, these should be to an approved standard, seven lever mortice locks for commercial business premises. • Commercial doors/door set should be to standard STS 202 or LPS 1175. Information is available on the Secure by Design website. • Consider fitting additional locks to increase security and/or security chains can be fitted through a secure ground anchor point to a door and padlocked. British Standard for padlocks BS EN 12320 Grade 6+ and closed shackle. • Roller shutter doors are an effective security barrier, a list of suppliers are available on the Secured by Design website. Signage • Signage can act as a deterrent to thieves. Consider putting up signs warning thieves CCTV is in operation on the site or the property is alarmed.
Forensic property marking • Mark valuable items with forensic property marking technology and register your marking solution. • Display property marking stickers on doors and windows warning thieves property marking technology has been used. • Take photographs of your marked valuables. • Security gates • Ensure security gates have anti-lift hinges and are to relevant standard LPS 1175 or similar. • Chain and padlock the front gate.
Security fencing • Consider security fencing - 2.3m high perimeter fence, welded mesh or similar and to relevant standard LPS 1175 or similar. Information is available on the Secure by Design website.
Vehicle mitigation • Please consider installing retractable bollards at the site entrance or in front of roller shutter doors. If you were to consider this, please look on the Secured by Design website for companies that supply and install security to a tested specification.
Fogging device/fog cannon • Fogging devices make it impossible for offenders to see when they are inside the premises.
Master blaster siren • This device makes it unpleasant for offenders stay inside the premises. The master blaster has an extremely loud sound output of 127dB.
CCTV • Ensure CCTV is installed by a company that is accredited by either the National Security Inspectorate or the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board. • CCTV should meet BS EN 62676 and identify persons to 100% Rotakin. • Ensure CCTV uses accurate time/date stamps for all images and that the images themselves are stored digitally. • If you are notified of an alarm or CCTV activation, please do not go to the building alone,at least two members of staff should attend. | ||
